The Roy White Band
Spear of Destiny Tour
Roy White was half of the eighties Liverpool duo White and Torch. The tour was supporting Spear of Destiny on their "World Service" tour, with a second support Living In Texas. Band line-up was (top row) Dave (guitar - ex-Vibrators), David Levy (bass), Roy White (vocal), Roly (drums - ex-Reflex), Jaq Robinson and Di Wright (backing vocals), Steve French (piano and Jupiter 8); (foreground) Phil Sharp, the tour manager who allegedly ended up ripping the band off and disappearing.
I don’t remember how I got the job, but I remember going round his flat in Primrose Hill: the lounge was dominated by his Jupiter 8 for my audition. The music – which was good - was kind of post-Bowie, and required grand polyphonic chords. The band’s image was essentially glam-rock, and the combination of that with a right wing post-punk act was not – one would have thought – a great idea.
We received particularly hostile receptions on two nights: we were spat off the stage at the notorious Barrowlands in Glasgow, and were under siege in our dressing room when we played Hanley, and had to wait until the crowd went away before we could get to our hotel.
After a couple of gigs supporting Paul Young and a few headliners, that was it, and I don’t think the band did much more. I bumped into Roy and David a year or so later at the mean Fiddler: Roy’s hair was short and they were still in pursuit of Phil Sharp for £5k they felt owed.
