My Music

Compositions

My most recent album Candide is named after my favourite book by Voltaire: a comic journey in the presence of a man named Dr Pangloss who believes - despite all the evidence to the contrary - that "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds". It's essentially having a go at religious belief: religion interests me a great deal as a phenomenon, although I'm an atheist myself.

On this recording are pieces I did for Michiko and two pieces I did for the Sport 90 exhibition at the Design Museum: Faster Higher Stronger and Fitter Quicker Richer.

The rest of the album is a variety of styles: I always seem to include a Latin number (Be Bop Ariba) amongst the more thematic pieces, and there's also an improvisation (Fracture).

The Visit was a recording that I hoped might interest record companies, and Graeme did his very best to take the cassette around, but despite the fact that many liked it, nothing came of it. My favourites on here are the title track The Visit, It's A Gift and (particularly because I was proud of the drum programming) Olympischen.

Finally, the pieces on Baroque were inspired by Michael Nyman's score for the film The_Draughtsman's Contract, Peter Greenaway's first conventional feature film, which blew me away when I first saw it. I also love the work of The Kronos Quartet.
The Contract was used by the BBC for a political programme for younger people called "Youth Parliament", presented by James Naughtie on Radio 4.
